Assam Police Thwart Infiltration by Bangladeshi Nationals

Guwahati, Dec 11 (NationPress) The Assam Police successfully thwarted an attempt of illegal infiltration from Bangladesh, apprehending two individuals from the neighboring country, as confirmed by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

The apprehended individuals were subsequently returned to Bangladesh by security forces, Sarma noted on Wednesday.

In a post on X, the Chief Minister stated, “In yet another successful operation to apprehend illegal Bangladeshi infiltrators, two Bangladeshis were captured near the International border and returned across the border by @assampolice.”

The individuals were identified as Simu Begum and Md. Ujjal.

Sarma commended the efforts of the security forces, posting, “Good job team!”

Security and vigilance along the international border with Bangladesh have been intensified due to recent unrest in the neighboring country.

Sarma previously emphasized that while some infiltrators managed to obtain Aadhaar cards, they cannot register on the voter list.

He remarked: "There is no possibility for individuals to cross the international border illegally from Bangladesh and enroll in the voter list in Assam as we have apprehended numerous individuals who entered Indian territory illegally, and they were pushed back within hours. Most of these infiltrators were arrested in the early morning around 5 a.m. and returned to their country by 9 a.m. In just a few hours, they cannot register on the voter list.”

Nonetheless, the Chief Minister believes it is prudent to maintain heightened vigilance in this regard.

“We have decided to implement a series of measures to detect illegal immigrants from Bangladesh, as there may be instances where some infiltrators go undetected by security personnel,” he added.

The Chief Minister pointed out that individuals from Bangladesh are entering India due to rising poverty in the neighboring nation following recent unrest after the Sheikh Hasina-led government’s fall.

He also noted that contrary to common assumptions, many of those attempting to illegally cross the border are from the Muslim community, primarily seeking employment opportunities.
