Guwahati, Jan 19 (NationPress) Two Bangladeshi women were captured by Assam Police on allegations of attempting to infiltrate from Bangladesh into Indian territory, as announced by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday.

The detained individuals were named Labono and Bijli. Following their apprehension by security forces, both were sent back to Bangladesh.

In a post on X, Sarma stated: "Maintaining a vigilant watch along the Indo-Bangladesh border, @assampolice apprehended 2 Bangladeshi nationals and returned them across the border."

Sarma previously noted that while some Bangladeshi infiltrators have managed to acquire Aadhaar cards, they cannot enroll in the voter list.

He explained: "There is no possibility for individuals crossing the international border illegally from Bangladesh to get registered in the voter list in Assam, as we have detained many who entered Indian territory illegally and returned them within a few hours. Most infiltrators were caught in the early morning around 5 AM, and before 9 AM, they were sent back to the neighboring country. In just two or three hours, they cannot register in the voter list."

Nonetheless, the Chief Minister emphasizes the importance of remaining vigilant on this issue.

"We have resolved to implement a series of measures to detect illegal immigrants from Bangladesh, as there may be instances where some infiltrators have evaded security personnel," he added.

The Chief Minister also pointed out that individuals from Bangladesh are entering India due to rising poverty in the neighboring country following unrest after the Sheikh Hasina government fell last year.

He further claimed that contrary to common belief, primarily individuals from the Muslim community have been attempting to cross the border illegally in search of employment.
