Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Guwahati, Dec 9 (NationPress) Over three lakh families in Assam have received letters granting approval for housing under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana – Gramin (PMAY-G). Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma emphasized that the aspirations of many individuals to own homes are on the brink of being realized within a few months.
During an event in Boko, CM Sarma stated, “Today marks a historic moment as over 3 lakh families in Assam will obtain sanction letters for their PMAY-G residences, bringing them closer to achieving their dreams of home ownership.”
As per the Chief Minister, 325,234 families are now on the path to realizing their dream of a secure and dignified dwelling.
“The distribution of sanction letters under PMAY-G symbolizes a commitment to a stronger and more secure Assam,” Sarma added.
Importantly, the state government has expedited the execution of the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY), focusing on completing outstanding housing units and broadening beneficiary access across both rural and urban regions.
A senior official from the government noted that the state has intensified monitoring, fund allocation, and coordination at the field level to ensure that qualified families receive pucca homes within the newly established timelines set by the Centre.
State government data reveals that Assam has achieved one of the highest rates of PMAY-Gramin uptake in the Northeast, with numerous homes approved across various phases.
The Assam government has also connected the progress of PMAY with broader socio-economic goals, including enhanced sanitation, water supply, electricity access, and availability of social security schemes.
Officials mentioned that the shift to pucca housing is crucial for economically disadvantaged families residing in flood-prone or erosion-affected areas, where permanent structures significantly improve safety and resilience.
The Chief Minister has consistently highlighted that housing for all is a top priority for his administration, reiterating the state's commitment to realizing the Prime Minister’s vision of providing dignified shelter for every household. Recent review meetings have aimed at eliminating obstacles, such as the scarcity of contractors in remote locations and logistical challenges in transporting construction materials.
