Guwahati, July 23 (NationPress) Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma commenced his visit to the upper Assam region on Wednesday to assess the progress of significant government schemes underway in this area.
This initiative aims to facilitate the timely execution of government projects in anticipation of the upcoming Assembly elections scheduled for next year in Assam.
In recent days, the CM has held review meetings with senior government officials to evaluate the impact of various government programs in both rural and urban settings.
Recently, CM Sarma noted that five districts in western Assam are experiencing a drought-like scenario due to markedly below-normal rainfall during this monsoon season. Speaking at a press conference after a cabinet meeting, he indicated that the affected districts -- Kokrajhar, Barpeta, Dhubri, Baksa, and Bongaigaon -- have reported a 40 percent rainfall shortfall, based on data from the India Meteorological Department and the Central Ground Water Board.
“In light of these circumstances, the Revenue Department will officially categorize these districts as drought-affected,” the Chief Minister stated.
He also mentioned that farmers who have insured their crops under the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana would qualify for compensation.
Some districts in eastern Assam have also reported inconsistent rainfall, fluctuating from deficient to excessive, according to CM Sarma.
In a significant advancement, the Assam Cabinet has approved financial sanction for the launch of the ‘Mukhya Mantri Eti Koli Duti Paat’ scheme, designed to assist tea garden workers statewide.
With a budget of Rs 342 crore, this flagship initiative is part of the government's year-long celebration of 200 years of Assam Tea.
The scheme intends to provide one-time financial aid of Rs 5,000 to each qualified tea garden worker, targeting nearly seven lakh beneficiaries, including both permanent and temporary employees.
The funds will be directly deposited into Aadhaar-linked bank accounts to enhance financial inclusion.
“This is a gesture of appreciation for the tea garden workers for their invaluable contribution to Assam’s identity and economy,” CM Sarma emphasized, underscoring the significance of the scheme in ensuring social security for one of the state's most crucial labor forces.
