Kolkata, July 23 (NationPress) - The Calcutta High Court has, once more, prolonged the interim bail of Sujay Krishna Bhadra, the primary suspect in the extensive cash-for-school-job scandal in West Bengal, until August 31.
However, the single-judge bench led by Justice Suvra Ghosh turned down a request from Bhadra’s legal representative to lift the restrictions on his movements, confining him to his residence in Behala. Instead, Bhadra’s counsel sought permission for him to move freely within the jurisdiction of the trial court.
During the past five months of his interim bail, Bhadra’s lawyer informed the court that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had not questioned him even once regarding the school job case.
Opposing the motion for increased mobility, CBI attorney Dhiraj Trivedi argued that the interim bail was granted based on Bhadra’s medical needs, making the request to leave his Behala residence unwarranted.
Justice Ghosh noted that while Bhadra might want to savor some fresh air, he must remember that he is not currently imprisoned.
The judge also dismissed Bhadra’s appeal to host and interact with relatives at his Behala home, stating, “Anyone can be your relative. For now, only the plea for the extension of interim bail is granted,” remarked Justice Ghosh.
It is important to note that one of the critical stipulations placed on Bhadra was the prohibition of any interactions, except with those involved in his medical care, during the interim bail period.
Recently, Bhadra requested the Calcutta High Court to organize a gathering at his home to commemorate the first death anniversary of his wife and to invite friends and relatives. However, this request was also rejected.
This marks the third extension of Bhadra’s interim bail. Initially granted in February of this year until March 31 on medical grounds, his bail was subsequently extended on March 24 to April 22, and again in April until July.
Now, for the third time, on Wednesday, his interim bail has been extended until August 31.
