Bengal School Employment Scandal: CBI Secures Custody of Key Suspect Bhadra

Kolkata, Dec 18 (NationPress) The personnel of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) escorted Sujay Krishna Bhadra, a key suspect in the cash-for-school job scandal in West Bengal, to the agency’s Nizam Palace office situated in central Kolkata in the early hours of Wednesday.
According to sources, CBI officers discreetly arrived at the Presidency Central Correctional Home in south Kolkata late on Tuesday night to take custody of Sujay Krishna Bhadra.
Subsequently, with little commotion, Sujay Krishna Bhadra was transferred to the central government-operated ESI Hospital at Joka, located on the southern outskirts of Kolkata.
After undergoing a comprehensive medical evaluation, Sujay Krishna Bhadra was returned to the agency’s Nizam Palace office early Wednesday.
Previously, on Tuesday afternoon, CBI officers formally arrested Bhadra after presenting him online before a special court in Kolkata.
His current custody period with the CBI extends until December 21, when he will be presented again at the special court.
The court has granted Sujay Krishna Bhadra permission to meet with his legal counsel for up to one hour each day during his time in CBI custody.
However, his legal representation will not be allowed to be present during his interrogations by agency officials.
On December 6, a single-judge bench of the Calcutta High Court provided conditional bail to Sujay Krishna Bhadra in a case filed against him by the Enforcement Directorate (ED), which is also investigating the school job scandal.
Following his bail from the ED case, Sujay Krishna Bhadra sought anticipatory bail from a Division Bench of the Calcutta High Court, fearing arrest by the CBI.
Nonetheless, on December 16, the Division Bench, comprising Justice Joymalya Bagchi and Justice Gaurang Kanth, dismissed Bhadra’s plea for anticipatory bail.
Ultimately, on Tuesday, the CBI succeeded in formally arresting him and obtaining custody for additional questioning.
