Bengal School Employment Scandal: Key Suspect Sujay Krishna Bhadra Admitted to Hospital

Kolkata, Dec 30 (NationPress) The charge framing procedure in the cash-for-school-job scandal at a special court operating under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) in Kolkata encountered a significant hurdle on Monday, as a major suspect in the case, Sujay Krishna Bhadra, was hospitalised after losing consciousness at the correctional facility where he is currently detained.

Reports indicate that Bhadra experienced discomfort early in the day, which led to his loss of consciousness. Subsequently, he was transferred from the Presidency Central Correctional Home in South Kolkata to the state-run S.S.K.M. Medical College & Hospital, also located in South Kolkata.

Earlier this month, a single judge bench at the Calcutta High Court granted bail to Bhadra in connection with the case filed by the Enforcement Directorate (ED). However, this bail did not result in his release, as shortly after, he was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which is conducting a separate investigation into the school job scandal.

Following his arrest, the CBI took him into custody for three days for interrogation. On December 21, the CBI chose not to extend his custody, according to the special court.

The CBI's legal representative informed the court that since his detention, Bhadra had been refusing food and prescribed medications, leading to various medical complications.

In the most recent charge sheet submitted by the ED at the special court, it was noted that officials have seized an amount of Rs 7.47 crore from a private corporate entity associated with Bhadra and are in the process of seizing an additional Rs 2.70 crore from the same company.

Bhadra, also known as ‘Kalighater Kaku’ (Uncle from Kalighat), was arrested by the ED in May 2023, and the CBI took him into custody in December 2023.
