Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Guwahati, March 11 (NationPress) The Chief Minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma, announced on Wednesday that the state is placing a strong emphasis on developing infrastructure in rural regions to foster economic growth and open up new avenues for entrepreneurs and small businesses throughout Assam.
In a message shared on the social media platform X, Sarma highlighted that rural areas are becoming the "new engines of growth" for Assam, propelled by a surge in new entrepreneurs, micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), alongside an increase in job prospects.
The Chief Minister emphasized that to sustain this growth, the government has ramped up investments in rural infrastructure, particularly through the Rural Infrastructure Development Fund (RIDF).
“Rural areas are now recognized as the new engines of growth in Assam due to the emergence of new entrepreneurs, MSMEs, and job opportunities. To ensure this growth is ongoing, we have made infrastructure development in rural areas a priority, investing over Rs 2,100 crore through RIDF to enhance core infrastructure,” Sarma stated.
As per Sarma, these investments aim to bridge the gap between rural and urban areas by enhancing connectivity, public utilities, and economic infrastructure in villages and semi-urban locations.
He mentioned that the RIDF funding is being utilized for various projects, including road construction, bridges, irrigation systems, and other vital infrastructure that bolsters agriculture, local industries, and rural livelihoods.
This initiative is part of a comprehensive strategy to empower grassroots economic activity and enable rural communities to engage more actively in Assam’s developmental journey.
Officials revealed that improved infrastructure in rural regions not only aids in the easier transportation of goods and people but also fosters favorable conditions for business, agricultural productivity, and local entrepreneurship to thrive.
The state government is convinced that enhancing rural infrastructure will be crucial in reducing the development gap between rural and urban territories, generating employment, and uplifting the overall living standards for residents.
The RIDF, managed by the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD), offers financial backing to states for constructing essential rural infrastructure, including roads, bridges, irrigation projects, and facilities in the social sector.
