Awami League Leader Shot in Kushtia: A Sign of Political Violence in Bangladesh
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Dhaka, March 30 (NationPress) A leader from the Awami League has sustained critical injuries after being shot by unknown attackers in the Mirpur upazila of Kushtia district, marking yet another instance of political unrest in Bangladesh, as reported by local media.
The injured individual is identified as Shafiqul Islam Azam, aged 52, who previously served as the general secretary of the Awami League in the Amla Union of Mirpur.
The shooting took place on Sunday evening at Sadarpur Bazar in Amla Union.
As per police reports, Shafiqul was at his business when a group of individuals summoned him outside and opened fire before fleeing the area, as reported by Bangladeshi media outlet UNB.
Local residents rushed him to Kushtia General Hospital in a critical state.
Dr. Hossain Imam, the Resident Medical Officer, stated that Shafiqul sustained gunshot wounds to his right eye, left jaw, and upper abdomen.
"The abdominal injury has likely compromised blood vessels, leading to severe bleeding. His condition remains critical," UNB quoted Imam as saying.
He added that Shafiqul has been referred to Dhaka for more advanced medical treatment.
Police recovered three live rounds, a magazine, and a motorcycle from the crime scene, while Assistant Superintendent of Police in Mirpur Circle, Muhammad Mahmudul Haque Majumder, confirmed that an investigation is ongoing.
This violent event underscores a troubling trend of attacks against Awami League leaders and supporters, a situation that has escalated since the former interim government led by Mohammad Yunus.
Notably, another leader of the Awami League, Shahnur Alam Shanto, passed away while in custody at Keraniganj Central Jail in Dhaka due to reported medical complications on March 13, as per local news.
Earlier this month, the Awami League raised alarms over what it termed ongoing mass arrests and custodial deaths of its members, claiming these actions infringe upon fundamental rights and threaten justice.
The party accused the current government led by the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) of employing state mechanisms to execute "repression, torture, and suppression" aimed at stifling dissent and exacting political revenge.
"The ongoing mass detentions of political figures, coupled with fatalities in custody, are causing widespread grief and outrage throughout the nation," stated the Awami League.
