Is There Any Update on Bangladesh Players' Participation in PGTI Events?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Jan 5 (NationPress) Former Indian cricketer and the current PGTI president Kapil Dev has indicated that no decisions have been finalized regarding the involvement of Bangladesh players in PGTI events, especially in light of the rising tensions between the neighboring nations. He mentioned that a board meeting will be convened to address this issue.
Recent weeks have seen escalating tensions between the two countries, fueled by reports of violent acts against religious minorities in Bangladesh. According to Kapil Dev, a meeting will occur shortly to evaluate the participation of players from Bangladesh. Prominent golfers from Bangladesh, such as Jamal Hossain, Md Siddikur Rahman, and Md Akbar Hossain, are currently competing in the PGTI tour.
“As of now, no decision has been made concerning the participation of Bangladeshi players in PGTI events. A board meeting is forthcoming, after which we will provide updates,” stated the legendary cricketer and PGTI President Kapil Dev in an interview with IANS.
In response to the increasing violence against minorities in Bangladesh, the BCCI has instructed the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to release their pace bowler Mustafizur Rahman from the squad.
Consequently, the Bangladesh government announced on Monday the suspension of broadcasts for all matches of the upcoming IPL season.
“We have received information regarding a directive from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) concerning the exclusion of Bangladesh’s star cricketer Mustafizur Rahman from the Kolkata Knight Riders team for the upcoming IPL tournament set to start on March 26, 2026. The rationale behind this decision remains unclear, leading to considerable distress and anger among the Bangladeshi populace,” stated a release from Bangladesh’s Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.
Given the rising security concerns and recommendations from their government, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has formally requested the ICC to shift all their T20 World Cup matches planned for February to Sri Lanka.
India and Sri Lanka are scheduled to co-host the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, with matches planned across various venues in both nations.
