Is the Decision About IPL Alone? BCCI Prez Discusses Bangladesh Situation
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Jan 3 (NationPress) The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced that the release of Bangladesh fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman from the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season pertains solely to the tournament itself, with no discussions regarding the T20 World Cup in India as of now, according to Indian cricket board president Mithun Manhas.
"The BCCI has reached this decision following comprehensive discussions, and Mr. Saikia has already communicated this to the media. This decision is strictly related to the IPL; the World Cup has not been a topic of conversation yet. We will provide details once we finalize that," Manhas informed IANS on Saturday.
This decision follows comments from BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia, who indicated that the three-time champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have been instructed to release left-arm pacer Mustafizur Rahman from their roster for the 2026 IPL due to recent events in Bangladesh.
Recently, numerous spiritual and political leaders criticized KKR and its owner, actor-producer Shah Rukh Khan, for acquiring Rahman during the auction, amidst reports of significant attacks on Hindu minorities in Bangladesh.
Rahman was secured by KKR during the IPL auction held in Abu Dhabi in December 2025 for a sum of Rs 9.2 crore. He has previously played for teams including Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), Mumbai Indians (MI), Rajasthan Royals (RR), Delhi Capitals (DC), and Chennai Super Kings (CSK). To date, he has taken 65 wickets in 60 matches since joining the tournament in 2016.
The release of Rahman from IPL 2026 raises concerns regarding Bangladesh's scheduled matches during the 2026 Men’s T20 World Cup in India. Bangladesh is set to face off against West Indies, Italy, and England on February 7, 9, and 14 at Eden Gardens in Kolkata, before competing against Nepal at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on February 17.
