New Delhi, Jan 3 (NationPress) The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have officially announced the release of Bangladesh fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman from their squad for the Indian Premier League (IPL) following a directive from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). This decision comes amidst considerable debate and controversy regarding the player’s involvement in the lucrative tournament.
In a statement, the franchise noted, "Kolkata Knight Riders acknowledges that BCCI/IPL, which oversees IPL operations, has mandated the release of Mustafizur Rahman from the team ahead of the forthcoming IPL season. This release has been executed in accordance with established procedures and consultations, in line with the BCCI's directive. The BCCI will permit KKR to select a replacement player as per IPL rules, with further details to follow."
On Saturday, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia confirmed that the board had instructed the three-time champions to part ways with Rahman and also allowed them to seek a replacement. "The BCCI has directed KKR to release Bangladesh pacer Mustafizur Rahman from their roster, while also permitting the franchise to identify a substitute," he stated to IANS.
This decision followed reports of unrest affecting the Hindu community in Bangladesh during December, alongside critics expressing concerns about Rahman's participation in the IPL.
Rahman had garnered significant attention when KKR secured him for a staggering Rs 9.20 crore in the December mini-auction, making him the highest-paid Bangladeshi cricketer in IPL history. His acquisition came after an intense bidding war involving Chennai Super Kings and Delhi Capitals, with his initial bid starting at Rs 2 crore.
The 30-year-old has taken 65 wickets across 60 matches, maintaining an economy rate of 8.13 since his debut in IPL with Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2016. He has played for several teams: Mumbai Indians in 2018, Rajasthan Royals in 2021, Delhi Capitals in 2022-23, and Chennai Super Kings in 2024.
He represented DC in IPL 2025 after stepping in as a replacement for Jake Fraser-McGurk due to injury.
