Why Did the BCCI Direct KKR to Release Mustafizur Rahman?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Jan 3 (NationPress) The directive issued by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to release Bangladesh bowler Mustafizur Rahman from their Indian Premier League (IPL) roster has faced significant backlash from a senior former board official, who described the decision as illogical and poorly timed with a major International Cricket Council (ICC) event on the horizon.
In a conversation with IANS under the condition of anonymity, the former official expressed concerns regarding the complications this decision might cause ahead of forthcoming international obligations. He also emphasized that Bangladesh should not be equated with Pakistan and deserves a different approach.
“I fail to comprehend the rationale behind this decision. Bangladesh cannot be categorized alongside Pakistan. They are not an adversarial nation. If the policy is to treat them as Pakistan, then there should be a complete ban. With the World Cup next month, and India set to host Bangladesh, how can this be justified? What transpired in Bangladesh was unfortunate, but those were mob actions, and such occurrences can happen anywhere,” the official shared with IANS.
This statement follows the BCCI's instruction to the IPL franchise Kolkata Knight Riders to release their top Bangladeshi player, Mustafizur Rahman, a directive that the franchise has complied with.
“Kolkata Knight Riders confirm that the BCCI or IPL, as the governing body of IPL, has directed them to release Mustafizur Rahman from the squad ahead of the forthcoming IPL season. The release was executed following proper procedures and consultations, as per the instructions of the Board of Control for Cricket in India. The BCCI will permit KKR to sign a replacement player in accordance with IPL regulations, and additional details will be communicated in due course,” the franchise stated.
Previously, on Saturday, BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia affirmed that the board had requested the three-time champions to release Rahman from their squad and allowed them to seek a replacement.
This decision was made in light of reports regarding violence against members of the Hindu community in Bangladesh in December. Additionally, critics had raised objections to Rahman's participation in the IPL.
Mustafizur, one of Bangladesh’s most seasoned white-ball bowlers, was anticipated to play a pivotal role for KKR in the upcoming IPL season. The franchise acquired him for a staggering 9.20 crore rupees during the December mini-auction, making him the most expensive Bangladeshi cricketer in IPL history.
