New Delhi, Jan 3 (NationPress) Former Indian cricketer Madan Lal expressed his support for the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) decision to instruct IPL franchise Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to release Bangladeshi cricketer Mustafizur Rahman. He emphasized that the officials are well aware of the circumstances and have likely made the correct decision following thorough consultations.
On Saturday, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia announced that the board has advised KKR to release the fast bowler Rahman from their roster ahead of the IPL 2026 season, putting an end to weeks of speculation regarding the high-profile signing. This decision comes amid reports of violent acts against the Hindu community in Bangladesh in December, which sparked criticism regarding the pacer’s involvement in the IPL.
“I believe that the BCCI’s actions were taken after extensive consultations, considering public sentiment. They may have also received feedback from the government. I can’t judge if it’s right or wrong, but the BCCI has a deep understanding of the situation. India played a significant role in helping Bangladesh gain independence, and the violence against our Hindu brothers there is profoundly unacceptable. The citizens of Bangladesh must contemplate this,” Lal, a member of India’s 1983 World Cup-winning team, told IANS.
Rahman attracted significant attention when KKR acquired him for a record Rs 9.20 crore during the December mini-auction, making him the most expensive Bangladeshi cricketer in IPL history. He was signed after intense bidding between Chennai Super Kings and Delhi Capitals, starting from Rs 2 crore.
Currently, KKR has not released an official statement regarding the BCCI's directive, but compliance is expected ahead of the season's commencement.
Previously, spiritual leader Devkinandan Thakur, along with others, openly criticized KKR and its co-owner, Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan, for signing Rahman. Thakur noted that followers of Sanatan Dharma, specifically Hindus, were displeased with KKR's choice due to the ongoing atrocities against Hindus in the neighboring nation.
