Is Bangladesh Heading Towards Islamist Mob Rule?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Dhaka, Oct 16 (NationPress) The Chief Advisor to Bangladesh's interim government, Muhammad Yunus, is allegedly guiding the nation towards “Islamist mobocracy”, while Western nations continue to commend his attempts to restore democracy, according to a report released on Thursday.
Furthermore, the suspicious death of a United States Special Forces officer at Dhaka's Westin Hotel last month, along with a recent terror threat against the US embassy, should act as a crucial wake-up call for Western countries regarding the alarming changes taking place in Bangladesh before it becomes too late.
“The recent alert from the US Embassy in Dhaka regarding a potential terror attack has highlighted the revival of Islamist radicalism in Bangladesh—a matter the West has largely overlooked. American diplomats have disclosed information about three potential Islamist extremists who were plotting to attack the embassy,” the report from 'Eurasia Review' noted.
As per the report, the Bangladesh police, who have mobilized their Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) units for the protection of the US Embassy, remain tight-lipped about the identities of the suspects.
It emphasizes that since assuming control in August last year, Yunus's interim government has released numerous convicted Islamic terrorists from prisons.
“Despite his reputation in the West as a micro-credit pioneer, Yunus has heavily relied on Islamist radical factions like Jamaat-e-Islami to maintain his interim government. The ban on Jamaat-e-Islami, which was imposed during Sheikh Hasina's tenure due to its advocacy for a Sharia-based Islamist state contradicting the secular ethos of Bangladesh, was swiftly lifted. Alarmingly, the Yunus administration has freed dozens of convicted Islamist terrorists, who are now roaming free,” the report elaborated.
“In a symbolic act, hundreds of Yunus supporters vandalized the 'Deepto Shopoth' sculpture, commemorating police officers who lost their lives confronting Islamist radicals during the July 2016 attack on Dhaka's Holey Artisan Bakery. The police stood by silently as these Islamist mobs glorified the slain terrorists as heroes,” it highlighted.
The report also pointed out how the Yunus administration has framed 25 military personnel, who were instrumental in combating terrorism under former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's leadership, accusing them of “serious human rights violations” and planning to prosecute them under the International Crimes Tribunal.
“While Yunus has turned Bangladesh into a living prison, imprisoning tens of thousands of Awami League activists and leaders on largely fabricated charges, many convicted Islamist radicals have been released,” it asserted.
