Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, April 12 (NationPress) The Crime Branch of the Delhi Police has apprehended a bank employee for allegedly aiding a massive cyber fraud operation that deceived numerous victims out of several crores of rupees through fraudulent bank accounts and online scam schemes.
As per a press statement released on Sunday, the suspect, identified as Irshad Malik (35), a Ghaziabad resident and an employee of RBL Bank, was taken into custody due to his suspected involvement in facilitating the establishment of a fake bank account used to divert funds in a reported cyber fraud case.
The Crime Branch emphasized that the accused “played a pivotal role in enabling the opening of a fraudulent bank account utilized for siphoning off the embezzled money,” further alleging that he misused his official capacity as a bank relationship manager.
The investigation traces back to FIR No. 138/23, filed on October 10, 2023, at the Cyber Dwarka Police Station, under Section 420 IPC, based on a complaint regarding the unauthorized withdrawal of Rs 88,000 from an SBI account via fraudulent transactions. The funds were subsequently funneled into a suspicious RBL Bank account registered under the name “Lawrie Trade Exim.”
During the inquiry, authorities discovered that the account had been “fraudulently created in the name of Manmohan Singh using forged documentation.” An FSL report substantiated that the signatures on the account opening form did not correspond with the authentic signatures of the account holder, confirming the forgery.
Previously, four co-accused individuals had been arrested and are currently out on bail.
According to police reports, on April 10, reliable intelligence suggested that Irshad Malik would be present at the RBL Bank branch in New Friends Colony. In response to this information, a Crime Branch team led by Inspector Satish Malik executed a raid and successfully apprehended him.
Subsequently, he was subjected to intensive questioning at the WR-II office in Dwarka, where he allegedly confessed to his involvement in the fraud.
Authorities indicated that the gang operated a structured cyber fraud network, targeting victims through social media platforms such as Facebook and Instagram by advertising fake part-time job opportunities.
During his questioning, Irshad Malik reportedly revealed that he had served as a Relationship Manager across various RBL Bank branches and was tasked with opening current accounts. He admitted that while stationed at the Safdarjung Enclave branch in 2023, he encountered co-accused Harjinder, alias Harji or Sunny.
He further disclosed that Harjinder had introduced a system where bank accounts could be opened for a commission fee. The accused acknowledged that he knowingly accepted forged documentation to facilitate account openings, breaching banking regulations.
He also admitted awareness that the accounts were intended for illegal activities, including routing proceeds from cyber fraud, and that he received commission payments for his involvement.
The Crime Branch confirmed that the investigation is ongoing to uncover more connections within the cyber fraud network and identify other individuals benefiting from the scam.
