Mumbai, March 25 (NationPress) The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), led by Ajit Pawar, is poised to see its legislator Anna Bansode from the Pimpri Assembly constituency take on the role of Deputy Speaker of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly.
On Tuesday, Bansode submitted his nomination to the legislative secretary, accompanied by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, Higher and Technical Education Minister Chandrakant Patil, and Industry Minister Uday Samant. The deadline for nominations was set for 12 pm on Tuesday, with no opposition member submitting a nomination.
While the NCP had considered another candidate, Rajkumar Badola from Chimur, they ultimately chose Bansode for the position.
The MahaYuti coalition holds a majority of 237 legislators in the state Assembly, ensuring Bansode’s election as deputy speaker is highly likely.
Bansode will officially assume the deputy speaker role on Wednesday, coinciding with the last day of the current budget session. Despite missing out on a ministerial position, he has been personally selected by Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar. Bansode will enjoy ministerial status. As part of an agreement among the MahaYuti partners, the BJP and Shiv Sena have allocated the deputy speaker's position to the NCP.
Having been elected for a fourth term in the state Assembly, Bansode first won as an NCP candidate in 2009, followed by victories in 2014 and 2019. After Ajit Pawar left his uncle and NCP founder Sharad Pawar to join MahaYuti, Bansode aligned with him. He was re-elected as an NCP candidate in the MahaYuti alliance during the 2024 Assembly elections. Ajit Pawar’s decision to endorse Bansode for the deputy speaker position is significant, particularly ahead of the forthcoming elections for the Pimpri Chinchwad municipal corporation.
