Bareilly, Oct 1 (NationPress) Two additional suspects linked to the Bareilly violence were apprehended during a confrontation, as confirmed by Bareilly Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Anurag Arya on Wednesday. He emphasized that those responsible for the violence will face consequences and that the investigation remains active.
SSP Arya stated, “During the encounter, we detained two suspects who are now receiving medical attention. Their names are Idris and Iqbal. Idris has approximately 20 criminal cases registered against him, including burglary and robbery. Likewise, Iqbal has 17 cases related to robbery and burglary. We also seized an anti-raid gun, a revolver, and live ammunition during the operation.”
He further mentioned, “Additionally, two mobile phones were recovered. Evidence suggests their involvement in the riots. Another suspect, Nadeem, currently incarcerated, had affiliations with them. All of these individuals possess criminal records. We suspect the interference of outside elements attempting to disturb the peace in the region. Our Special Investigation Team (SIT) is pursuing further inquiries. I assure the public that no innocent individual will be troubled in this process, but those guilty will be held accountable.”
The Bareilly riots erupted on September 26, following Friday prayers, when a large assembly of individuals marched through the streets bearing placards and banners proclaiming “I Love Muhammad” while chanting slogans. The crowd was en route to Islamia Ground and Khalil School Chowk.
When the crowd began chanting “Nara-e-Taqbeer,” police requested them to disperse, but the protesters did not comply. Tensions escalated, and the situation became chaotic. Some individuals reportedly began throwing stones at the police, which resulted in a baton charge by the authorities.
This baton charge created a stampede-like scenario, leading to chaos in the area. During the disturbance, rioters vandalized at least two motorcycles and targeted a local shop. Following police intervention, the crowd eventually dispersed, leaving behind slippers, shoes, and stones scattered across a 200-meter radius near Khalil Tiraha.
On September 27, Tauqeer Raza, a local cleric and leader of the Ittehad-e-Millat Council, was arrested. His endorsement of the ‘I Love Muhammad’ campaign had incited unrest in Bareilly. Authorities reported a substantial crowd gathered outside his home after a video he shared supporting the campaign went viral, raising concerns of further disturbances.
Tauqeer Raza has been placed under 14 days of judicial custody as officials remain vigilant to prevent additional flare-ups.
The All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) condemned the arrest of Maulana Tauqeer Raza Khan and others following the unrest in Bareilly. In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Board demanded their immediate release and criticized the Uttar Pradesh government for its management of the situation.
The AIMPLB also denounced remarks made by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and accused the police of adopting a vindictive stance towards peaceful protests occurring throughout the state in response to a similar incident in Kanpur, where youths were allegedly charged for displaying ‘I Love Muhammad’ posters.
