Kolkata, Oct 9 (NationPress) With the Election Commission of India (ECI) poised to commence its special intensive revision (SIR) in West Bengal after October 15, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed on Thursday her firm stance against the removal of voters' names from any specific community during this revision process.
She further criticized the ECI for rushing the SIR process in West Bengal, especially amid the festive season and the ongoing struggles faced by residents in rain and landslide-affected areas of North Bengal.
"I will not accept any deletions of names from the voters' list concerning any specific community due to this unnecessary haste. I urge the ECI not to play with fire. The ongoing natural crisis remains a significant issue in West Bengal, with the floods having displaced many. How are residents expected to provide the necessary documentation for the SIR under such conditions? With the festivities ongoing, how will they submit required papers?" the Chief Minister remarked while speaking to the press on Thursday afternoon.
This statement comes as a Central team, led by Deputy Election Commissioner Gyanesh Bharti, is visiting West Bengal for two days to assess the readiness for the SIR.
Additionally, the Chief Minister subtly pointed fingers at certain officials within the commission, alleging they are overstepping their boundaries.
"One specific officer has multiple allegations of corruption against him, and I will disclose those details when appropriate. I hope he refrains from overstepping his authority. It is premature for the Commission to hold meetings with booth-level officers when the state administration remains intact," she questioned.
CM Banerjee also highlighted that two individuals from Nadia district received notices related to the National Register of Citizens (NRC) shortly after Durga Puja, raising her concerns about the Union government's intentions to impose the NRC in West Bengal through the SIR.
"Why are NRC notices being issued under the guise of SIR? Is the Union government attempting to implement the NRC here? They will not succeed. The SIR is fundamentally a scheme to eliminate the names of genuine voters from the electoral rolls. There is an ongoing effort to saffronize the Central agencies," she asserted.
