Kolkata, April 17 (NationPress) West Bengal Governor C.V. Ananda Bose has chosen to proceed to the communal violence-affected Murshidabad district on Thursday night, disregarding earlier requests from Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to avoid visiting until the situation stabilizes completely.

Sources from Raj Bhavan, Kolkata revealed that the Governor will depart for Murshidabad on Thursday night. Upon arrival, he plans to stay overnight at the District Circuit House and on Friday morning, he will tour various areas in this minority-populated district, which has been tense for much of the week following violent protests against the Waqf (Amendment) Act.

Earlier that day, the Chief Minister had appealed through the media for the Governor to delay his visit to Murshidabad.

“I urge the Governor to postpone his trip to Murshidabad for a few more days. I could visit, but I restrained myself to prevent encouraging others to do the same. A team from the West Bengal Commission for Women also intended to go, but I advised them to wait a few days,” the Chief Minister stated.

She added that she would only head to Murshidabad once normalcy is restored.

In the meantime, Supratim Sarkar, the ADG of law & order (South Bengal range), informed the media on Thursday evening that a review would be conducted to assess any potential intelligence failures in anticipating the unrest in various areas of Murshidabad.

He reported that 60 FIRs have been filed concerning the situation, and the total number of arrests has reached 274. Additionally, the police are prioritizing the return of individuals displaced by violence, with 75 having already returned home.

“We are committed to ensuring their safe return to their homes without fear. The police and CAPF camps are present, so there is no need for concern,” Sarkar assured.
