Kolkata, April 22 (NationPress) West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is set to visit the conflict-affected district of Murshidabad in the first week of May.
This district experienced significant unrest earlier this month when protests against the Waqf (Amendment) Act escalated into violence, tragically resulting in the loss of three lives.
In response, the local administration in Murshidabad has initiated efforts to support the rehabilitation of those affected and displaced by the disturbances in the area.
The Chief Minister disclosed her upcoming visit during her two-day tour in West Midnapore district on Tuesday.
“I will be heading to Murshidabad in the first week of May, and once there, I will ensure all necessary arrangements are made. Trust me; supporting the people is my responsibility. We must avoid riots. Peace must prevail in Bengal,” she stated on Tuesday afternoon.
During her speech, the Chief Minister pointed out that outsiders played a role in fueling communal tensions.
“We are committed to uncovering the conspiracy behind how these outsiders stirred trouble with the help of some locals,” she asserted.
Earlier this month, as communal violence peaked, the Chief Minister explained her decision to delay visiting Murshidabad and requested Governor C.V. Ananda Bose to cancel his planned visit to the unrest-stricken areas.
“I am choosing not to go now because I want to see the situation stabilize. Let the community regain their confidence, and I will visit only after that. I have also urged the Governor to hold off on going to Murshidabad at this time,” she remarked earlier in the month.
Despite her appeal, the Governor proceeded with his visit, engaging with those affected in Murshidabad last week.
He also toured a temporary relief center located in the adjacent Malda district, where the displaced residents from Murshidabad were being accommodated.
