New Delhi, July 20 (NationPress) England’s Beth Mead shared insights on her shift from being recognized as the player of the tournament and securing the golden boot for six goals during England's victorious 2022 Euro campaign to now supporting the team from the bench amid a wave of injuries in the current Women’s European Championship.
As England prepares for the semi-final against Italy on Wednesday (IST), Mead has started in just one of the four matches, contributing a goal in the impressive 6-1 victory over Wales.
"You have to be prepared to step up at a moment's notice. It’s crucial to adapt to roles you may not favor or typically play, which was the case for me against Sweden," she stated.
"I found myself in midfield as a number six, then transitioned to a number ten – switching positions multiple times throughout the match, which I thoroughly enjoyed. I love being on the pitch and making a difference for the team. This adaptability is essential for any player,” Mead shared with BBC Sport.
After falling behind with two early goals against Sweden, the defending champions rallied to a 2-2 draw in the quarterfinals, eventually progressing through penalties (3-2). The Lionesses have displayed remarkable unity throughout the tournament, a quality Mead believes distinguishes them from their competitors.
"It's challenging when you’re not starting, especially when you know you're capable, but I think this is what makes us unique as a team. Our unity and commitment to uplift one another is key to our success. I’ve recognized a change in my role; it’s vital to contribute competitively in training to improve our overall performance. So far, I believe we’re succeeding in this endeavor," she added.
