New Delhi, July 20 (NationPress) Jess Carter, a defender for England, has announced her decision to take a hiatus from social media following instances of racial abuse during the ongoing Women’s European Championship. Throughout the tournament, Carter has logged 310 minutes on the field, starting all four matches as England advances to the semifinal against Italy on Wednesday (IST).
In her Instagram post, she stated, “Since the tournament began, I've faced significant racial abuse. While every fan is entitled to their views on performance and outcomes, I believe it is unacceptable to attack someone based on their appearance or ethnicity. Consequently, I will step away from social media and allow my team to handle it.”
After initially conceding two goals against Sweden, the reigning champions made a comeback to equalize the quarter-final match at 2-2, ultimately progressing through penalties.
The Lionesses rallied in support of their teammate, with players like Esme Morgan, Alessia Russo, Beth Mead, Chloe Kelly, and others expressing their solidarity in the comments.
“I am always thankful for the genuine support from fans. However, I am taking this step to safeguard my well-being while maintaining my focus on contributing to the team. I hope that by voicing my experience, those responsible for the abuse will reconsider their actions to prevent others from enduring similar treatment,” she added.
Additionally, Mark Bullingham, the CEO, issued a statement reaffirming their full support for Carter. “Our priority is Jess, and we are dedicated to providing her with the support she requires. We strongly denounce the individuals responsible for this abhorrent racism,” he stated.
“Upon learning of the racist abuse directed at Jess, we promptly contacted the UK police. They are coordinating with the relevant social media platforms, and we are collaborating with the police to ensure those responsible for this hate crime face justice.”
“Unfortunately, this is not the first occurrence of such behavior towards an England player, so we had protocols in place to respond swiftly and, where feasible, offer information to aid any potential police actions,” the statement concluded.
