Is the Bhopal Assembly Addressing the Stray Dog Issue and Water Crisis?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Bhopal, Feb 17 (NationPress) The Madhya Pradesh Assembly engaged in a vibrant discussion regarding the stray dog problem in Bhopal on the second day of the current Budget session.
The matter was brought to attention by Congress MLA Atif Aqeel during the Attention Motion, pointing out that the rising population of stray dogs and incidents of dog bites have become a significant issue.
Aqeel, representing the Bhopal North constituency, claimed that the Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC) invested Rs two crore in sterilization and vaccination efforts, yet the stray dog count continues to escalate.
He informed the Assembly that 40 to 50 stray dog bites are reported daily, predominantly affecting children and the elderly.
“The Bhopal Municipal Corporation is actively catching, sterilizing, and vaccinating many dogs each day, yet the stray dog issue persists. This isn't just a matter of discomfort; it has evolved into a pressing public health crisis and an administrative failure,” stated Congress MLA Aqeel.
In response, veteran BJP leader and Madhya Pradesh Urban Development Minister, Kailash Vijayvargiya, mentioned that a dog squad has been established within the BMC to respond swiftly to reports.
Minister Vijayvargiya noted that 26,900 dogs have been vaccinated in the current fiscal year, with 5,023 rabies vaccines on hand.
He also dismissed claims of any fatalities related to dog bites in Bhopal.
“Dogs tend to get agitated when they are hungry. It’s our tradition to offer the first roti to cows and the last roti to dogs, along with some flour for ants,” added Minister Vijayvargiya.
During the Assembly discussion, Congress and BJP leaders exchanged barbs, creating a lively atmosphere.
Congress MLA Bhanwar Singh Shekhawat remarked that Kailash Vijayvargiya is the “Minister of dogs,” highlighting a perceived lack of attention to the crisis.
BJP MLA Umakant Sharma quipped: “This is the first time I’ve heard of dogs being referred to as terrorists.”
Former Assembly Speaker Sitasaran Sharma and BJP MLA Shalendra Kumar Jain also raised concerns regarding the lack of anti-rabies serum, advocating for its sufficient availability.
Later, Congress MLA and Leader of Opposition (LoP) Umang Singhar criticized the BJP, claiming that the state government was reluctant to discuss the issue of contaminated drinking water that resulted in numerous fatalities, while readily addressing the stray dog situation.
“The Madhya Pradesh government is willing to debate the dog issue, but not the matter of water contamination, which is far more critical. The Congress demands an in-depth discussion on the contaminated water that has led to the deaths of at least 35 individuals in Indore’s Bhagirathpura area. This reflects the BJP-led state government’s priorities,” asserted LoP Singhar.
