Bihar bus crash kills 5 at Bettiah orchestra event, several injured
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Five people were killed and more than half a dozen injured on the night of 22 August when a passenger bus lost control and ploughed into a roadside orchestra gathering in the Lauriya police station area of West Champaran district, Bihar. The crash has plunged Bankatwa village into mourning and reignited concerns about the safety of roadside public events.
How the Accident Unfolded
The fatal collision occurred near Parau Tola Bankatwa on the Bettiah-Lauriya main road at approximately 11:50 pm on Friday night. A passenger bus operated by Shahi Travels, travelling from Gorakhpur towards Bettiah, was approaching the area when a speeding truck came from the opposite direction. In an attempt to avoid a head-on collision, the bus reportedly lost control and veered into the crowd gathered beside the road for an orchestra performance.
The event was part of a Chhathiyar ceremony hosted at the residence of Shatrughan Dubey, according to eyewitnesses. The gathering had no reported safety barriers or traffic clearance in place at the time of the crash.
The Deceased and Injured
Five people died at the scene. They have been identified as Bahadur Mahto, Sanjay Kumar, Bhola Dubey, Devendra Dubey, and Chhangur Ram — all residents of Bankatwa. Notably, Devendra Dubey was the father of the child whose Chhathiyar ceremony was being celebrated, making the loss especially devastating for the host family.
Among those injured were Vinay Kumar Yadav, Shyam Babu, Moti Chandra Mahto, and Naresh Ram. Police and local residents rushed the wounded to Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) Bettiah for treatment.
Public Anger and Police Response
The crash triggered immediate anger among local residents, who damaged the bus and truck involved in the collision. Narkatiaganj Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Jayprakash Singh reached the spot and helped restore order. Police took custody of the five bodies and sent them for post-mortem examinations at GMCH.
An FIR has been registered under rash and negligent driving against the drivers of both the bus and the truck. Both drivers fled the scene and remain at large, with West Champaran Police actively working to apprehend them.
Safety Concerns in Focus
The incident has drawn attention to the practice of organising large public gatherings and orchestra performances along busy highways without adequate traffic management or safety clearances. This is not an isolated concern — roadside events on national and state highways have been implicated in several fatal accidents across Bihar and neighbouring states in recent years. Authorities have yet to announce any specific measures in response to this crash.
As investigations continue, the families of the five victims grieve a loss that arrived without warning on what was meant to be a night of celebration.
