New Delhi, Oct 17 (NationPress) In a significant initiative aimed at safeguarding free and fair elections in Bihar, the Election Commission of India (ECI) held a crucial meeting on Friday with leaders from various enforcement and security agencies to enhance vigilance against the trafficking of cash, drugs, liquor, and other illegal inducements.
The gathering of the Multi-Departmental Committee on Election Intelligence (MDCEI) took place at Nirvachan Sadan in New Delhi, presided over by Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, alongside Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi.
The Commission underscored the importance of proactive surveillance and preventive measures to mitigate electoral malpractices that could sway voter behavior.
High-ranking officials from pivotal enforcement bodies, including the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC), Enforcement Directorate (ED), Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), Central Economic Intelligence Bureau (CEIB), Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU-IND), Reserve Bank of India (RBI), Indian Banks’ Association (IBA), Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), Railway Protection Force (RPF), Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), Border Security Force (BSF), Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB), Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS), Airports Authority of India (AAI), and the Postal Department participated in the discussions.
The Chief Secretary, Director General of Police, State Police Nodal Officer, and the Chief Electoral Officer of Bihar joined the meeting virtually.
The ECI noted that the various agencies provided updates on their preparations, actions taken, and plans for ensuring inducement-free elections.
Briefings covered a broad spectrum of topics related to preventing the use of money and other inducements that could corrupt elections.
The Commission urged all agencies to improve coordination and intelligence sharing across national, state, and district levels.
Emphasizing a zero-tolerance stance against electoral inducements, the ECI instructed agencies to identify vulnerable constituencies and bolster checks along inter-state and international borders to impede the flow of contraband and illicit funds.
The Commission also mandated that relevant agencies monitor constituencies for the transportation of smuggled goods, drugs, liquor, cash, and counterfeit currency across borders.
Stressing the importance of strict compliance, the Commission asserted that the integrity of elections relies on a collective effort to combat economic offenses that undermine democracy.
The involved agencies were urged to maintain constant vigilance and take swift action against any suspected violations as Bihar approaches a critical electoral process.
