Srinagar, Oct 19 (NationPress) The National Conference (NC) has officially designated Aga Syed Mahmood, a former Minister from Jammu and Kashmir, as their candidate for the upcoming Budgam Assembly by-election, as confirmed by a party spokesman.
Aga Syed Mahmood served as the NC Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) for the Pattan constituency from 1987 to 1990.
From 1996 to 2000, he represented the Beerwah Assembly constituency.
He was also a member of the Upper House in the previous bicameral Legislature of the former state of Jammu and Kashmir.
On the other hand, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has previously nominated Aga Syed Mohsin as their candidate for the Budgam bypoll. The party has also selected Devyani Rana as their candidate for the Nagrota Assembly by-election.
The Budgam Assembly seat was secured in the 2024 elections by NC Vice-President and current Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah.
He also successfully contested the 2024 Assembly elections from the Ganderbal constituency.
Later, he opted to resign from the Budgam seat to serve as the representative for Ganderbal in the 90-member Assembly.
Devender Singh Rana won the 2024 Assembly election from Nagrota on a BJP ticket, but he sadly passed away on October 31, 2024.
The BJP has since nominated Devender Singh Rana's daughter, Devyani Rana, for the Nagrota bypoll.
The NC has proposed the Nagrota seat to its ally, Congress, for them to put forth a candidate, although a final decision from Congress's leadership is still pending.
Relations between NC and Congress have soured somewhat regarding seat-sharing negotiations for the four Rajya Sabha seats.
While Congress sought a safer seat from the three where the alliance holds a political edge, NC offered Congress the fourth Rajya Sabha seat to nominate their candidate.
The BJP appears to have a clear lead for the fourth Rajya Sabha seat, having put forward State BJP President Sat Sharma for the position.
Subsequently, Congress announced it would refrain from contesting the Rajya Sabha elections in Jammu and Kashmir, expressing dissatisfaction over NC's decision to field its candidates for the three seats.
Voting for both the Budgam and Nagrota Assembly constituencies is scheduled for November 11.
In the 2024 Assembly elections, the NC secured 42 seats, the BJP 29, Congress six, PDP three, CPI-M one, Peoples Conference one, Aam Aadmi Party one, Awami Ittehad Party one, and six Independents.
Congress later opted to back the Omar Abdullah-led NC government from the outside without joining it.
