Srinagar, Oct 14 (NationPress) Following a significant decision by National Conference (NC) MP and prominent party figure, Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi, to refrain from participating in the election campaign for his home constituency, Budgam Assembly, Jammu and Kashmir's Chief Minister Omar Abdullah dodged inquiries regarding the issue on Tuesday.
“I have no knowledge about it,” the CM replied, skillfully evading a question about Ruhullah’s remarks.
Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi, a notable Shia Muslim leader from Budgam, commands substantial respect within the community due to his family's esteemed religious heritage.
Addressing reporters about his involvement in the NC's campaign for the bye-election in Budgam, Ruhullah stated, “Last year, I campaigned for the party (NC), assuring the public that their political and developmental aspirations would be met. Unfortunately, the party has failed to deliver on its promises. How can I approach the people again and request their votes when we haven't fulfilled any commitments made in 2024?”
“Yes, I can still participate in the elections as a voter,” he added.
In the 2024 J&K Assembly elections, Omar Abdullah secured victory in the Budgam Assembly seat but later stepped down to retain the Ganderbal Assembly seat, having won both constituencies.
The Election Commission recently announced bye-elections for the Budgam and Nagrota Assembly seats, the latter becoming vacant following the passing of incumbent MLA, BJP’s Devender Singh Rana, on October 31, 2024.
When approached by reporters for comments on Ruhullah’s declaration, Omar Abdullah avoided giving a clear response. His evasion suggested that Ruhullah’s withdrawal from the campaign could be seen as a form of dissent.
Ruhullah has remained at the center of political discourse since his election to the Lok Sabha from the Srinagar-Budgam constituency in 2024 as the NC candidate.
In a related update, Muntazir Mohiuddin, chief spokesperson of the Apni Party led by Altaf Bukhari, has declared his intention to contest the Assembly bye-election from Budgam as an Independent candidate.
