Srinagar, Nov 7 (NationPress) The Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Omar Abdullah, announced on Friday that various political factions have united against the National Conference in light of the upcoming by-election in the Budgam Assembly constituency, attributing this coalition to the NC's commitment to its electoral promises.
While campaigning for NC candidate Aga Mehmood in Budgam, Omar Abdullah remarked, “Political parties have come together against the NC because we have committed one 'sin'—standing firmly by our electoral promises. During the 2014 elections, one party asked for your votes, pledging to keep the BJP out of power in Jammu and Kashmir. You trusted them, but they then allied with the BJP and began dismantling the state's integrity.”
“The NC remains steadfast in fulfilling the promises made to voters ahead of the 2024 Assembly elections,” Omar Abdullah affirmed.
The by-election for the Budgam Assembly seat is set for November 11, following Omar Abdullah's resignation from this seat after he won both Budgam and Ganderbal in the recent elections.
Omar opted to step down from Budgam to represent the Ganderbal Assembly in the 90-member J&K Legislative Assembly.
The NC has nominated Aga Mehmood for Budgam, while the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has put forward Aga Syed Muntazir Mehdi, and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has selected Aga Mohsin. Independent candidate Muntazir Mohiuddin is also contesting after resigning as the chief spokesperson for Altaf Bukhari's Apni Party.
Interestingly, NC MP Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi, who is from Budgam, has distanced himself from the party's campaign, stating he cannot urge people to vote based on unfulfilled promises made during the 2024 Assembly elections.
Additionally, a by-election is scheduled for November 11 in the Nagrota Assembly constituency in Jammu, which became vacant following the death of BJP candidate Devender Singh Rana on October 31, 2024.
The BJP has nominated Devender Singh Rana's daughter, Devyani Rana, for the Nagrota bypoll.
