Srinagar, Oct 18 (NationPress) The Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir and Vice-President of the National Conference (NC), Omar Abdullah, announced on Saturday that his party is set to declare its candidate for the Budgam Assembly by-election on Monday.

Following the passing of the BJP MLA, Devender Singh Rana, on October 31 of last year, two assembly seats, Nagrota in the Jammu division and Budgam in the Valley, have become vacant. Additionally, Omar Abdullah resigned from the Budgam seat after securing victory in the 2024 Assembly elections.

During the 2024 elections, Abdullah won from both Ganderbal and Budgam.

He has made the decision to represent the Ganderbal seat in the 90-member Assembly, thus vacating the Budgam seat.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has already put forth its candidates for the two bypolls, naming Devyani Rana for Nagrota and Aga Syed Mohsin for Budgam.

Muntazir Mohiuddin, a spokesperson for the Apni Party, which is led by Altaf Bukhari, has resigned from the Apni Party to contest as an Independent candidate from the Budgam Assembly seat.

As of now, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has yet to nominate a candidate for the Budgam bypoll.

The NC has offered the Nagrota Assembly seat to its ally, the Congress Party, although there has been no official confirmation from Congress regarding fielding a candidate in alliance with the NC for this significant seat.

The Election Commission has announced that voting for the Budgam and Nagrota bypolls is scheduled for November 11.

In the 2024 Assembly elections, the NC secured 42 seats, the BJP obtained 29, Congress won six, PDP garnered three, CPI-M claimed one, the Peoples Conference (PC) received one, the Aam Aadmi Party got one, the Awami Ittehad Party earned one, and Independents accounted for six.

Later, Congress decided to support the current NC government from the outside without officially joining it.

Point of View

It is essential to observe how alliances and decisions shape the electoral landscape. The National Conference's strategic moves could redefine its standing in the Assembly, while the BJP and Congress's responses will be pivotal in determining the outcome of the bypoll. A watchful eye is needed as these developments affect the broader political dynamics in the region.
