Srinagar/Jammu, Nov 11 (NationPress) Voting commenced smoothly on Tuesday in the Assembly constituencies of Budgam and Nagrota in Jammu and Kashmir, with a significant turnout as citizens exercised their democratic rights.
The Budgam constituency boasts 1.76 lakh voters, with 173 polling stations established for the electorate.
Voters donned traditional tweed overgarments known as ‘Pherans’ as they emerged in the early hours, although women were less represented, opting to finish household tasks before heading to the polling booths.
Despite the chilly morning, the enthusiasm was palpable as queues formed outside polling stations.
Voting commenced at 7 a.m. and will conclude at 6 p.m. In Budgam, 17 candidates are contesting, with Aga Syed Mehmood from the National Conference (NC) and Aga Syed Muntazir Mehdi from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as the primary contenders.
Other candidates include Aga Syed Mohsin from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Nazir Ahmad Khan from the Awami Ittehad Party, Deeba Khan from the Aam Aadmi Party, and Mohiuddin Muntazir, an Independent.
The need for this bypoll arose in Budgam after NC Vice President and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah resigned from this constituency following his victory in the October 2024 assembly elections.
In Nagrota, a high turnout was also observed, with 10 candidates vying for votes. The main competition is between Devyani Rana of the BJP, Shamim Begum of the NC, and Harsh Dev Singh from the J&K National Panthers Party.
This bypoll was necessitated by the unfortunate passing of BJP MLA Devender Singh Rana on October 31, 2024. The BJP has nominated his daughter, Devyani, from Nagrota, which is traditionally a stronghold for the party, and a wave of sympathy has been observed during the campaigning for the late Rana’s daughter.
For the 97,893 eligible voters in Nagrota, 150 polling stations have been set up.
To ensure safety at vulnerable locations in both Budgam and Nagrota constituencies, paramilitary and police forces are present in substantial numbers.
Election officials have confirmed that all necessary measures are in place for a seamless polling experience, with polling staff, static and mobile surveillance teams, and magistrates stationed across both constituencies.
