Srinagar, Oct 22 (NationPress) The Regional National Conference (NC) candidate for the Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) Assembly bypoll in Budgam constituency, Aga Syed Mehmood, stated on Wednesday that the lack of participation from NC MP, Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi, in the party's campaign will not hinder his prospects in the upcoming bye-election.
Aga Syed Mehmood, a former minister and two-time NC MLA representing Pattan and Beerwah, has been put forward for the Budgam bypoll set for November 11.
This seat became vacant following Omar Abdullah's resignation, as he opted to represent the Ganderbal constituency in the 90-member legislative assembly.
Omar Abdullah had secured victories in both Budgam and Ganderbal during the 2024 Assembly elections.
On Wednesday, NC candidate Aga Syed Mehmood asserted that the absence of backing from party MP Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi would not impede his performance in the Budgam bye-election.
He conveyed to reporters that the NC is greater than any single individual and maintains substantial grassroots support throughout the constituency.
“NC shaped Ruhullah, not the other way around. He has supporters within his family and among friends, which is acceptable, but ultimately NC supporters will rally for the party,” he remarked.
The NC candidate highlighted that the bye-election is contested under the party's name and its legacy, rather than personal influence.
He emphasized that this election is not about an individual, but about the NC, and he firmly believes voters will back the party.
Aga Mehmood expressed optimism regarding his prospects, acknowledging that the electoral contest in Budgam is demanding. “I am hopeful of victory, although every election presents a rigorous challenge that tests one’s determination,” he stated.
It is noteworthy that Aga Syed Mehmood is related to Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi, and both hail from Budgam district.
Aga Mehmood previously mentioned that Ruhullah would campaign for him, but after Aga Syed Mehmood's statement, Ruhullah reiterated his choice to withdraw from the NC poll campaign.
Ruhullah affirmed that while he respects his elders, his loyalty is to his own conscience and not to anyone else.
The BJP has nominated Aga Syed Mohsin for the Budgam bypoll while the PDP has put forth Aga Syed Muntazir Mehdi, and Mohiuddin Muntazir has filed papers as an Independent candidate.
