Is Omar Abdullah Unyielding Against Ruhullah Mehdi's Reservation Demands?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Srinagar, Dec 26 (NationPress) J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Friday dismissed the senior National Conference (NC) leader and MP Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi regarding the controversy surrounding reservation in government jobs and professional colleges in J&K.
In a robust rebuttal to the MP's comments on reservation, Abdullah stated: "I am not afraid of anyone’s threats, nor will I make any erroneous decisions under duress. I have no idea what you perceive yourself to be."
The Chief Minister emphasized that issues like the reservation policy should not be decided through intimidation or public pressure but should be resolved within the constitutional and legal framework after adequate discussion with all stakeholders.
This firm response followed Mehdi's recent ultimatum to the government, warning that if it does not engage with protesting students by December 27, he would personally join their protests.
Mehdi has consistently criticized the NC's leadership for failing to fulfill commitments made in the 2024 election manifesto that secured the party's power in J&K.
The events of Friday have intensified the conflict between Omar Abdullah, who also serves as the NC's Vice President, and Ruhullah Mehdi.
To enhance the reservation quota for open merit candidates in J&K to 40 percent, the state cabinet, led by Abdullah, has proposed reducing the reservation quota under the Resident of Backward Area (RBA) by 3 percent and that for the Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) by 7 percent.
Once sanctioned by Lt Governor Manoj Sinha, the total reservation for different categories in government jobs and professional colleges will amount to 60 percent, leaving 40 percent for open merit candidates in the UT.
Currently, the reservation breakdown includes 8 percent for SCs and OBCs each, 20 percent for STs, 10 percent for both EWS and RBA, and 4 percent for residents of areas adjacent to the actual Line of Control/International Border (ALC/IB). Additionally, there is a 10 percent horizontal reservation, which includes 6 percent for ex-servicemen and 4 percent for Persons with Disabilities (PwDs).
