New Delhi, Nov 21 (NationPress) The National Biodiversity Authority has allocated Rs 38.36 crore to the Andhra Pradesh Forest Department and Rs 1.48 crore to the Andhra Pradesh State Biodiversity Board for the protection and conservation of the renowned Red Sanders, an official disclosed on Friday.
This financial support is part of an initiative to enhance biodiversity conservation efforts, pushing the cumulative Access and Benefit Sharing disbursements in India to over Rs 110 crore, stated the official.
Red Sanders, celebrated globally for its rich red timber, is found only in specific locations within the Eastern Ghats, particularly in Anantapur, Chittoor, Kadapa, Prakasam, and Kurnool districts of Andhra Pradesh.
A total of Rs 87.68 crore has been raised through regulated access to auctioned or confiscated Red Sanders wood, which serves as a benefit-sharing fund managed by the Andhra Pradesh Forest Department.
To date, the NBA has disbursed over Rs 49 crore to the Forest Departments of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Odisha, and the Andhra Pradesh State Biodiversity Board for the conservation, protection, and research of Red Sanders, as per the official release.
Furthermore, Rs 3 crore has been provided to 198 farmers in Andhra Pradesh and Rs 55 lakh to 18 farmers in Tamil Nadu.
The recent funding of Rs 38.36 crore to the Andhra Pradesh Forest Department will significantly enhance the capabilities of frontline forest personnel, fortify protection strategies, promote scientific management of Red Sanders forests, and create livelihood opportunities through Biodiversity Management Committees, while also reinforcing long-term monitoring programs. This marks a substantial advancement in securing a sustainable future for this iconic species, according to the statement.
Additionally, the NBA has sanctioned a significant project to cultivate one lakh Red Sanders saplings by the Andhra Pradesh Biodiversity Board at an expenditure of Rs 2 crore.
Previously, an initial amount was released, and the remaining Rs 1.48 crore has now been allocated to the Andhra Pradesh Biodiversity Board. These saplings will subsequently be distributed to farmers, thereby enhancing the Trees Outside Forests (ToF) initiative and aiding in the conservation of this endangered species beyond its native habitat, as per the statement.
This initiative exemplifies how Access and Benefit Sharing can actively support India's progress by showcasing leadership in implementing global biodiversity principles, ensuring that conservation-related benefits reach local communities, farmers, and biodiversity custodians.
The NBA will persist in collaborating with State Biodiversity Boards, Forest Departments, Biodiversity Management Committees, and local stakeholders to safeguard India's rich biological heritage for the benefit of future generations, stated the official release.
