Why is the BJD Demanding Arrests Following the Dhenkanal Mine Explosion?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Bhubaneswar, Jan 5 (NationPress) The Biju Janata Dal (BJD) expressed profound sorrow on Monday regarding the devastating explosion that transpired in a stone/dolomite mine located in Gopalpur village of Dhenkanal district on Saturday, claiming the lives of two individuals. They have called for the swift apprehension of those accountable for this unfortunate event.
During a press briefing on Monday, BJD Spokesperson and Media Coordinator Lenin Mohanty stated that the tragic incident occurred on January 3. He pointed out that the blasting permit for the quarry had expired on September 30, 2025, while the lease was due to lapse on December 31, 2025.
He further indicated that the Dhenkanal Collector, Ashish Ishwar Patil, has confirmed that the mining license had indeed expired on December 31, 2025, yet illegal mining and blasting activities persisted beyond this date.
“The official death toll currently stands at two, but unofficial sources suggest that approximately 10 individuals might have lost their lives, with many feared trapped under the rubble,” Mohanty elaborated.
Expressing grave concerns, the BJD leader questioned how such illegal mining operations could proceed without the awareness of district officials, police, and the Mining Department.
“If the government asserts it is taking decisive action against illegal mining, how do such incidents occur? Where is the leaseholder, and why has no action been initiated against those responsible?” he questioned.
Additionally, he mentioned that previously, the Deputy Speaker of the Odisha Legislative Assembly had appealed to the Chief Minister to intervene and halt mineral exploitation in the state, while the Balasore MP had urged the Chief Minister to address illegal sand mining in the Subarnarekha River.
He claimed that revenue from major minerals had plummeted from Rs 50,000 crore to Rs 34,000 crore, and revenue from minor minerals had dropped from Rs 14,085 crore to Rs 6,000 crore.
Mohanty concluded by asserting that the manner in which the BJP state government is exploiting the mineral-rich state of Odisha could lead to the depletion of all mineral resources within the next five years.
