Shillong, Feb 6 (NationPress) In a pivotal turn of events regarding the East Jaintia Hills coal mine disaster, police have taken into custody two individuals believed to be the proprietors of the illegal coal mine where a devastating explosion resulted in the deaths of at least 18 individuals, officials reported on Friday.

East Jaintia Hills Superintendent of Police Vikash Kumar confirmed that the suspects were apprehended in relation to the blast that transpired on Wednesday morning in the Thangsko area. However, the police refrained from disclosing the identities of the detained individuals, noting that this information will be released once they appear before the court.

The explosion at this unauthorized coal mine has thus far led to the tragic loss of 18 workers, with one person suffering injuries. This incident has once again underscored the ongoing prevalence of illegal rat-hole coal mining activities in the district, despite numerous court orders prohibiting such operations.

In response to the incident, the High Court took a firm stance, mandating immediate arrests. A division bench consisting of Justice H.S. Thangkhiew and Justice W. Diengdoh took suo motu cognizance of media reports concerning the explosion that took place in the Thangsku area. The court expressed profound concern over the fact that illegal coal mining operations continued in the district, even after a previous deadly incident reported on January 14 this year, highlighting persistent violations of mining bans and judicial directives.

Highlighting that repeated disasters signal serious administrative failures, the bench instructed the district administration and police to act promptly. The court directed the Deputy Commissioner and Superintendent of Police of East Jaintia Hills to identify and arrest the mine owners, operators, and all individuals implicated in the alleged illegal mining activities.

Authorities were also instructed to confiscate all equipment, documents, and other incriminating materials associated with the mining operations.

Emphasizing the necessity for prompt relief efforts, the High Court urged the district administration to ensure that all affected individuals, including the injured, receive immediate medical care and necessary support wherever feasible.

In a strong message of accountability, the bench summoned the East Jaintia Hills Deputy Commissioner and Superintendent of Police to appear in person before the court on February 9.

The officials are required to provide a detailed report outlining the actions taken thus far, including arrests made, seizures conducted, and measures implemented to prevent the continuation of illegal coal mining in the district.

The court also demanded an explanation from the officials regarding how such prohibited activities were allowed to persist despite prior incidents and existing legal restrictions.

It warned that stringent actions would follow if the authorities fail to show effective and concrete action.

In one of the deadliest mining incidents in recent history, the bodies of at least 18 laborers were recovered following a massive explosion at a suspected illegal coal mine in the Thangsku area of Meghalaya’s East Jaintia Hills district on Thursday.
