According to Vikash Kumar, the Superintendent of Police for East Khasi Hills district, "Our ongoing operations have led to the recovery of four additional bodies from inside the mine. Unfortunately, one injured individual receiving care at the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) in Shillong has died from his injuries."
Officials have also stated that two other victims, who suffered severe injuries during the explosion and the resulting fire at the illegal mine, succumbed while being treated. Their remains were transported by family members to Civil Hospital, Khliehriat, and Civil Hospital, Jowai, respectively.
This brings the overall death count to 25.
Of the deceased, 17 have been identified, and their bodies have been returned to their families after completing all legal and medical formalities, as reported by officials.
In relation to the incident, the police have filed a suo motu FIR at the Khliehriat Police Station under Case No. 14/2026. This is based on violations of Sections 105, 118(2), and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), along with Sections 21 and 21(1) of the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act and Section 3 of the Explosive Substances Act.
Thus far, two suspects have been detained in connection with the case. They are Forme Chyrmang (36), son of the late Kom Dkhar, from Jalaphet Pordung, and Shamehi War (42), son of Wiseman Syrti, from Sutnga Pohwailong, both residents of East Jaintia Hills district.
The suspects were presented before a court and have been remanded to police custody for three days for further questioning.
Authorities continue to work towards identifying and apprehending others involved in the illegal mining operation.
