What Caused the Fatal Explosion in Meghalaya's Coal Mine?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Shillong, Feb 5 (NationPress) Tragically, four laborers have perished, and another is in critical condition following a significant explosion that struck a suspected illicit coal mine in the Thangsko region of Meghalaya's East Jaintia Hills district on Thursday, as confirmed by officials.
The blast, thought to be a result of using high-intensity dynamite for mining, caused the collapse of nearby mine shafts, trapping workers deep underground and heightening concerns over further casualties.
According to local reports, the force of the explosion was so severe that it caused nearby quarry structures to collapse instantly, which significantly hindered rescue operations.
East Jaintia Hills Superintendent of Police, Vikash Kumar, verified the occurrence and stated that police units, along with disaster management teams, were dispatched to the scene immediately following the explosion.
“We can confirm the incident took place this morning. Immediate actions have been initiated, and support from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) has been requested to carry out rescue operations,” Kumar told the media.
One laborer who survived the explosion has sustained severe injuries and was first taken to the Sutnga Primary Health Centre.
He has since been transferred to Shillong for advanced medical care, where his condition remains critical, according to hospital sources.
Initial investigations suggest that the coal mine was operating illegally, contravening existing safety regulations and the long-standing ban on rat-hole coal mining in the area.
Officials have stated that a further inquiry is underway to determine the precise cause of the explosion and to identify those accountable for the illegal operation.
This incident has once again highlighted the ongoing issue of illegal coal mining in the East Jaintia Hills district, which has experienced several deadly accidents in recent years despite numerous enforcement efforts and court-imposed bans.
Meanwhile, SDRF teams from Jowai are working against the clock to reach the remote site of the accident and conduct search and rescue operations amidst unstable terrain and safety risks.
Authorities have indicated that more information will be released as the rescue operation continues and the situation becomes clearer.
