Shillong, Feb 5 (NationPress) Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma announced on Thursday that a total of 18 bodies of workers have been retrieved from a collapsed illegal coal mine located in Thangsko, within the coal-rich East Jaintia Hills district, as search and rescue efforts continue.

During a press briefing, Sangma shared that the tragic incident took place earlier that day when a significant dynamite blast led to the mine's collapse, trapping numerous labourers inside. The explosion reportedly occurred around 11:30 a.m. during ongoing mining operations.

The Chief Minister has instructed two cabinet ministers, Wailadmiki Shylla and Lahkmen Rymbui, to visit the site of the accident to monitor the situation and coordinate the relief and rescue operations. This site is situated in a remote location, approximately a three-hour journey from the district headquarters in Khliehriat.

Sangma is personally overseeing the developments and remains in constant communication with local officials.

The Deputy Chief Minister, responsible for the Home (Police) department, is also actively working with the administration to ensure the efficiency of rescue operations.

“Search and rescue operations are ongoing, and an investigation has been launched,” the Chief Minister remarked, emphasizing that the state government is treating this incident with the utmost seriousness.

Disaster response teams, including members of the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), have been deployed to assist local authorities in the challenging rescue operation, which is complicated by unstable terrain and safety concerns.

Previously, the Chief Minister indicated that the Meghalaya government has mandated a thorough inquiry into the incident and has assured that accountability will be enforced.

“The Government of Meghalaya has initiated a comprehensive investigation into this tragic event. Those accountable will face strict legal repercussions,” he affirmed.

Highlighting the importance of public safety, the Chief Minister reiterated that the state will not compromise on the protection of human lives.

He assured that the administration will implement all necessary legal and administrative measures based on the inquiry's findings.

“In this time of grief, the State stands united with all those impacted,” Sangma added.
