Chennai, Nov 18 (NationPress) The current Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Tamil Nadu has ignited a new political storm, with the BJP accusing the ruling DMK of orchestrating a conspiracy to disrupt the Election Commission of India's initiative.
The SIR process, which commenced on November 4 and occurs once every 20 years to refresh electoral rolls by eliminating deceased, duplicate, and ineligible entries, has already seen intense political discourse in the past two weeks.
On Tuesday, the Federation of Revenue Department Associations declared that its members would boycott duties related to the SIR starting November 18, citing administrative challenges.
This decision was met with swift condemnation from the BJP, which claimed that the boycott was politically motivated and part of a larger scheme by the ruling DMK.
BJP State spokesperson A.N.S. Prasad stated that the DMK has been involved in continuous attacks against the ECI to undermine the revision process, particularly following the Bihar Assembly election outcomes.
He asserted that the ruling party had introduced tens of thousands of fake voters in various constituencies across the State over the past four years and was concerned that the SIR would reverse years of electoral manipulation.
According to Prasad, DMK operatives have been conducting SIR activities on the ground in numerous regions, replacing government-appointed personnel by distributing enumeration forms door-to-door and even instructing residents to retrieve forms from party offices.
He claimed that supporters of the opposition faced difficulties accessing the forms, while DMK affiliates were being prioritized. With the Revenue Department staff now stepping back from fieldwork, Prasad warned that this would place the entire SIR process in the hands of DMK supporters.
This could lead to a scenario where only DMK affiliates are added to the electoral rolls. The boycott is part of a broader conspiracy to eliminate anti-DMK voters, he alleged.
The BJP leader emphasized that government employees are legally obligated to adhere to ECI directives and accused the DMK administration of covertly endorsing the boycott to exert pressure on the Commission.
He called on the ECI to take decisive action to ensure impartiality and demanded that the State government fully cooperate with the revision exercise.
Prasad also criticized Chief Minister M.K. Stalin for unfounded attacks on the ECI and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, stating that the results of the 2026 Assembly elections would serve as a referendum on such misleading narratives.
