BJP Alleges Congress Ties with Kuki Groups in Manipur
Imphal, Dec 11 (NationPress) The BJP's Manipur unit on Wednesday leveled allegations against the opposition Congress, claiming it has an alleged connection with Kuki separatist organizations.
BJP Manipur unit General Secretary, K. Sharatkumar, in support of his assertions, referenced a letter from the World Kuki-Zo Intellectual Council (WKZIC) directed to Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and the Leader of Opposition (LoP) in the Lok Sabha.
According to Sharatkumar, the letter dated November 25 requested the Congress to propose a “Kuki Political Solution Bill” in Parliament, which seeks the establishment of a separate Union Territory for areas predominantly inhabited by Kuki tribals.
Sharatkumar characterized this request as clear evidence of a “pact” between Kuki organizations and the Congress party.
He also alleged that during the April 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the Kuki Inpi Manipur (KIM) issued directives urging Kuki tribal voters to support Congress candidates in exchange for political concessions from the party, including support for a separate Kuki administration and exemptions from the National Register of Citizens (NRC).
Furthermore, Sharatkumar accused Kuki separatist groups, including those under the Suspension of Operations (SoO) agreements, of colluding with the Congress to skew the electoral process.
He pointed to instances of cadres being deployed at polling stations and threats against voters who did not comply as forms of electoral interference.
“The Congress party has formed an implicit alliance with Kuki groups to advocate for policies that favor Kuki dominance in Manipur, including contentious proposals that seek to exclude the Chin-Zomi-Mizo tribes from Scheduled Tribe recognition while maintaining protections for Kuki classifications,” stated the BJP leader.
Sharatkumar further alleged that these maneuvers have led to unchecked immigration and the demographic predominance of illegal Kuki immigrants, which undermines Manipur’s social and political structure.
The BJP General Secretary claimed that the ongoing unrest in Manipur, which erupted in May of last year, was a calculated initiative orchestrated by Kuki leaders, including P.S Haokip, a Myanmar-born individual who also serves as the President of the Kuki National Organisation (KNO).
Sharatkumar referenced a widely circulated video showing Kuki National Army (KNA) personnel showcasing advanced weaponry as proof of foreign involvement and the escalating power of Kuki insurgency networks.
He elaborated on the peril posed by Kuki separatism and alleged narco-terrorism.
He equated the struggle against Kuki militancy to India's broader fight against various forms of terrorism, calling for a unified approach to defend the state's integrity and national security.
Sharatkumar reiterated his claims that Kuki outfits, including those engaged in the SoO agreement, collaborated with the Congress to influence the electoral landscape.
Meanwhile, it was noted that when the Congress was in power in Manipur, a SoO agreement was established with the United Peoples' Front (UPF) and Kuki National Organisation (KNO).
The UPF and KNO, a coalition of 23 militant groups, signed the SoO with the government on August 22, 2008, with 2,266 cadres expected to remain in various designated camps across Manipur.
