Guwahati/Imphal, Jan 13 (NationPress) A significant assembly of MLAs from the Kuki-Zo community, alongside leaders of the Kuki-Zo Council (KZC) and representatives from Kuki-Zo armed factions under the Suspension of Operations (SoO), convened on Tuesday. This meeting called upon the Central government to address their political demands prior to the upcoming Manipur Assembly elections set for 2027.

Following the onset of ethnic turmoil in Manipur in May 2023, all Kuki-Zo tribal organizations, including their governing body KZC, the ten MLAs from the community, and militants engaged under the SoO agreement, have sought a distinct administrative framework akin to a Union Territory complete with a legislative assembly.

A joint press release following the meeting in Guwahati conveyed that the representatives from the three factions assessed the political landscape of Manipur and the ongoing conditions within the state.

“Recognizing the extraordinary de facto demographic and administrative separation that has persisted for the last 32 months, the assembly unanimously passed five resolutions,” the release stated.

Among the resolutions was a call for the resolution of the political issues concerning the Kuki-Zo communities before the upcoming 2027 Assembly elections.

Additionally, it was resolved that Kuki-Zo MLAs would abstain from participating in the establishment of any new state government and that any pledges made by the Central government should be fulfilled in a timely manner, specifically during the tenure of the current Assembly.

Recently, the KZC and the Indigenous Tribal Leaders Forum (ITLF), a prominent organization representing tribal communities in Manipur, reaffirmed that the ten MLAs from the Kuki-Zo tribal community would not engage in the formation of a new state government under any circumstances.

Out of the ten Kuki-Zo legislators, seven are affiliated with the BJP, while the other three represent various regional parties. Nevertheless, the Central government, BJP, and numerous Meitei community organizations have consistently dismissed the call for a distinct administration or a Union Territory with a legislative assembly.

Meanwhile, officials from the Union Home Ministry have engaged in multiple discussions with SoO militants, the KZC, various Kuki-Zo civil society groups, MLAs, and NGOs to deliberate on their demands.

Point of View

It is vital to recognize the complexities of the Kuki-Zo community's situation in Manipur. Their demands for political representation highlight the ongoing ethnic tensions and the need for the Central government to address these issues effectively, ensuring a stable and harmonious environment for all communities involved.
