Key Takeaways
Agartala/Kohima, March 19 (NationPress) The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has officially revealed its candidates for the upcoming by-elections scheduled for April 9 in the Northeastern states of Tripura and Nagaland.
As per the announcement made by election authorities, nomination submissions commenced on March 16, with the final date for submissions set for March 23. The scrutiny of nominations will be held on March 24, and candidates can withdraw their nominations until March 26. The results are expected to be announced on May 4.
BJP General Secretary Arun Singh shared that Jahar Chakraborti will represent the party in the Dharmanagar Assembly constituency in the North Tripura district, while Daochier I. Imchen will launch his political career from the Koridang Assembly constituency in Mokokchung district, Nagaland.
The BJP’s Central Election Committee made these decisions during a meeting on Wednesday, chaired by party President Nitin Nabin. The meeting, which took place at the party's headquarters in New Delhi, included prominent figures such as Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, and Home Minister Amit Shah.
Jahar Chakraborti, 59, who holds the position of Vice President for BJP’s North Tripura district, is contesting from the Dharmanagar Assembly for the second time. In 2013, Chakraborti, a dedicated Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) member, ran for the same seat but was defeated by Congress candidate Biswa Bandhu Sen.
Chakraborti's wife, Barnali Goswami, has previously held the role of Chairperson for the Tripura State Commission for Women. He is set to compete against Amitabha Datta, the CPI (M)-led Left Front candidate and former MLA.
The need for a bypoll in the Dharmanagar constituency arose following the passing of Biswa Bandhu Sen, who held the Speaker position in the Tripura Assembly.
Sen, aged 72, died at a private hospital in Bengaluru on December 26, 2025, after an extended illness. He was elected to the Assembly four times—twice as a Congress candidate in 2008 and 2013, and subsequently in 2018 and 2023 as a BJP member from the same constituency. Approximately 46,143 voters, including 23,763 women, are eligible to participate in the Dharmanagar bypoll.
In Nagaland, Daochier I. Imchen will stand for election in the Koridang Assembly constituency, a seat that his father, the esteemed Naga leader Imkong L. Imchen, held for over 25 years.
The by-election in Koridang was called following the death of Imkong L. Imchen, who passed away in a private hospital in Guwahati on November 11, 2024, after a short illness. He was 75 years old. Imchen had been elected to the Nagaland Assembly five times from the Koridang constituency—initially as an Independent in 2003, followed by wins on Naga People's Front tickets in 2008, 2013, and 2018, and lastly on a BJP ticket in 2023.
In total, 22,390 voters, including 11,013 women, are eligible to vote in the Koridang Assembly constituency.
