Key Takeaways
Agartala/Kohima, March 16 (NationPress) The official notifications regarding the by-elections scheduled for April 9 in two Assembly constituencies of the Northeastern states, namely Tripura and Nagaland, were released on Monday, as per officials.
According to the announcements made by the electoral authorities in both states, the nomination process commenced on March 16, with the deadline for submissions set for March 23. Nomination scrutiny will occur on March 24, and candidates can withdraw their nominations until March 26.
Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar revealed the by-election schedule alongside the Assembly elections for four states—Assam, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and West Bengal—as well as the Union Territory of Puducherry. The by-polls also involve eight Assembly constituencies across Goa, Gujarat, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Nagaland, and Tripura.
The CEC further detailed the electoral timetable for the Dharmanagar Assembly constituency in North Tripura and the Koridang Assembly constituency in Mokokchung district of Nagaland, with the latter reserved for Scheduled Tribes. Voting for both constituencies will take place on April 9, and results will be announced on May 4.
The necessity for a by-election in the Dharmanagar Assembly constituency arose due to the unfortunate passing of the Speaker of the Tripura Assembly and esteemed legislator Biswa Bandhu Sen. Sen, aged 72, passed away on December 26, 2025, at a private hospital in Bengaluru after an extended period of medical treatment lasting over four months.
Sen was elected to the Tripura Assembly on four occasions—twice from Dharmanagar on a Congress ticket in 2008 and 2013, and subsequently in 2018 and 2023 as a candidate from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the same constituency. On March 9, the main Opposition CPI (M)-led Left Front announced former MLA Amitabha Datta as their candidate for the Dharmanagar by-election.
As of now, the ruling BJP and other parties have not yet announced their candidates. The electorate for the Dharmanagar Assembly by-election comprises 46,143 voters, including 23,763 women.
Simultaneously, the by-election for the Koridang Assembly constituency in Nagaland was prompted by the death of the prominent Naga leader Imkong L. Imchen, who passed away in a private hospital in Guwahati on November 11, 2024, after a brief illness. Imchen, aged 75, had been elected to the Nagaland Assembly five times from the Koridang constituency—initially as an Independent in 2003, and subsequently on Naga People’s Front tickets in 2008, 2013, and 2018, before securing victory on a BJP ticket in 2023.
The Koridang Assembly constituency has a total of 22,390 eligible voters, including 11,013 women.
