Agartala/Kohima, March 15 (NationPress) The Election Commission (EC) has officially declared by-elections for two Assembly constituencies located in the Northeastern states of Tripura and Nagaland.

During the announcement, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar outlined the election timeline for four states: Assam, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and West Bengal, along with the Union Territory of Puducherry. Additionally, he confirmed bypolls for eight Assembly seats across Goa, Gujarat, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Nagaland, and Tripura.

The CEC further specified that voting for the Dharmanagar Assembly constituency in Tripura and the Koridang Assembly constituency in Nagaland, the latter being reserved for Scheduled Tribes, will take place on April 9. The election results are expected to be announced on May 4.

The necessity for the by-election in the Dharmanagar Assembly constituency arose due to the unfortunate passing of veteran legislator and Tripura Assembly Speaker Biswa Bandhu Sen. Sen, aged 72, died at a private hospital in Bengaluru on December 26, 2025, after a prolonged medical treatment period exceeding four months.

Sen was a seasoned politician, having secured election to the Tripura Assembly four times: twice representing Congress in 2008 and 2013, and subsequently as a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 2018 and 2023 from the same constituency.

On March 9, the main opposition party, the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) led Left Front, has nominated former MLA Amitabha Datta as their candidate for the Dharmanagar bypoll. Currently, the ruling BJP and other political parties have yet to finalize their candidates.

In a parallel development, the by-election for the Koridang Assembly constituency in Nagaland was necessitated by the demise of prominent Naga leader Imkong L. Imchen, who passed away after a short illness at a private hospital in Guwahati on November 11, 2024. Imchen, 75, had a rich political history, being elected to the Nagaland Assembly five times from the Koridang constituency—initially as an Independent in 2003, followed by victories on Naga People's Front tickets in 2008, 2013, and 2018, before winning on a BJP ticket in 2023.

Point of View

The announcement of by-elections in Tripura and Nagaland highlights the ongoing political dynamics in the Northeastern region. These elections are pivotal for local governance and reflect the changing political landscape following the passing of influential leaders.
