Agartala, Dec 26 (NationPress) The Speaker of the Tripura Legislative Assembly and four-time MLA Biswa Bandhu Sen has sadly passed away at a private hospital in Bengaluru on Friday after receiving medical care for over four months.

He was 72 years old. A former Congress member turned BJP leader, Sen is survived by his wife, one son, and a daughter.

In honor of the late leader, the Tripura government has declared three days of state mourning starting from Friday.

During this state mourning period, from December 26 to 28, the National Flag will be flown at half-mast throughout the state, and no official entertainment events will take place.

Additionally, the government has decided that all state offices, including those outside Tripura, along with Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) and educational institutions, will remain closed on Friday.

A state funeral for Biswa Bandhu Sen will be held on Saturday, December 27.

Chief Minister Manik Saha, senior minister Ratan Lal Nath, Leader of Opposition and CPI (M) Tripura state Secretary Jitendra Chaudhury, Deputy Speaker Ram Prasad Paul, Congress leader Sudip Roy Barman, and many other leaders expressed their condolences.

The Chief Minister shared on social media: "I am profoundly saddened by the loss of the Hon’ble Speaker of the Tripura Legislative Assembly, Bishwa Bandhu Sen. His untimely passing is an irreparable loss for the people of our state. I extend my heartfelt sympathies to his grieving family and followers. I pray for the eternal peace of his soul and strength for his family during this challenging time."

As Speaker, Sen fulfilled his duties with great efficiency and managed the assembly proceedings with fairness and outstanding competence, the Chief Minister later remarked to the press.

Sen had undergone emergency surgery at a private hospital in Agartala after suffering an internal brain hemorrhage on August 8 and was transferred to Bengaluru for advanced medical care on August 11.

According to an official, at the behest of Chief Minister Manik Saha, two doctors from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, came to assess Sen's health and treatment protocols initially conducted at Tripura Medical College and subsequently at a private facility in Agartala.

Sen’s son, Arijit Sen, who is also a physician, previously stated that they opted to transfer his father to a Bengaluru hospital for further treatment.

Arijit expressed gratitude to Chief Minister Manik Saha and the medical team for their diligent management of his father's initial treatment in Agartala.

The Assembly Speaker experienced a brain hemorrhage at Agartala railway station on August 8, just after boarding a train to his hometown, Dharmanagar, in the North Tripura district.

Biswa Bandhu Sen was elected to the Tripura Legislative Assembly four times—twice from Dharmanagar as a Congress candidate in 2008 and 2013, and later twice as a BJP candidate in 2018 and 2023 from the same constituency.
