Agartala, March 12 (NationPress) In a significant development, the ruling BJP's legislative assembly party has nominated the experienced tribal MLA Ram Pada Jamatia as the next Speaker of the Tripura Legislative Assembly during a meeting held on Thursday night.
A representative of the BJP stated that the legislative party has officially proposed Jamatia for this crucial role.
Present at the meeting were Chief Minister Manik Saha, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ratan Lal Nath, state BJP President Rajib Bhattacharjee, current Deputy Speaker Ram Prasad Paul, central observer Rajdeep Roy, along with various senior party leaders.
The BJP's state unit has expressed its congratulations to Jamatia following his nomination. Additionally, it was noted that the party's allies, the Tipra Motha Party (TMP) and the Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT), have also pledged their support for Jamatia's candidacy.
Ram Pada Jamatia, a prominent tribal leader, was elected in the 2023 Assembly elections from the Bagma Assembly constituency located in the Gomati district.
The need for a new Speaker arose after the passing of the previous Speaker, Biswa Bandhu Sen, on December 26 of last year.
Sen, a four-time MLA, passed away at the age of 72 in a private hospital in Bengaluru after a prolonged medical treatment lasting over four months.
In related news, the Budget session of the Tripura Assembly is set to commence on Friday (March 13), with Governor Indrasena Reddy Nallu scheduled to address the assembly on the first day.
The detailed agenda for the upcoming session was established during a Business Advisory Committee (BAC) meeting held on March 6.
Minister Ratan Lal Nath announced that the state government plans to introduce three bills aimed at creating three new universities: Tripura Women’s University, Tripura University of Health Sciences, and Tripura Technical University.
Furthermore, Finance Minister Pranajit Singha Roy will present the Budget for the financial year 2026–27 on March 16, along with the Supplementary Budget for the fiscal year 2025-26, marking the third Budget of the BJP-led government's second term.
The Budget session is expected to run until March 25, according to the Parliamentary Affairs Minister.
