Key Takeaways
Agartala, Feb 28 (NationPress) The budget session for the Tripura Assembly is set to kick off on March 13, with Governor Indrasena Reddy Nallu expected to deliver his address on the first day, as confirmed by officials on Saturday.
A high-ranking Assembly official indicated that the Governor's address would inaugurate the ninth session of the 13th Tripura Assembly. The comprehensive agenda and schedule for the forthcoming session will be determined during a meeting of the Business Advisory Committee on March 6.
According to reports, a new Speaker may be elected during this session, following the passing of the previous Speaker, Biswa Bandhu Sen, on December 26 last year. However, Assembly Secretary Amiya Kanti Nath informed IANS that the formal procedure for selecting a new Speaker has yet to commence, and no official announcement has been made.
Political insiders suggest that multiple BJP MLAs are vying for the Speaker's role, with tribal leader Ram Pada Jamatia, elected from the Bagma constituency in Gomati district, seen as a leading candidate. The BJP has not yet publicly designated its candidate for the Speakership.
Biswa Bandhu Sen, who served as an MLA for four terms, passed away at the age of 72 in a private hospital in Bengaluru, after undergoing medical treatment for over four months.
Additionally, Finance Minister Pranajit Singha Roy will unveil the Budget for the fiscal year 2026–27 during this session. "Typically, the Budget is presented on the first day of the session, but the final decision will be made during the Business Advisory Committee meeting on March 6," stated the official.
He also noted that this will be the third Budget presented during the BJP-led government's second term, and it is anticipated that the Budget will allocate increased funding to the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC), as the 28-member tribal body is poised for crucial elections in March or April.
