Chennai, Dec 9 (NationPress) The president of the Tamil Nadu Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Nainar Nagenthran, stated on Tuesday that the INDIA bloc's initiative to initiate impeachment proceedings against a sitting High Court judge is an effort to intimidate and weaken the judiciary. He cautioned that the populace will not accept such coercive tactics.

In a fervent statement, Nagenthran criticized the decision by members of the INDIA bloc to target Justice G. R. Swaminathan from the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court, who recently ruled on a matter concerning religious practices at the Thiruparankundram hills.

The BJP leader emphasized that the judge's ruling had protected the cultural and religious rights of worshippers and is now being unjustly attacked for political motives.

Nagenthran labeled the impeachment attempt as shameful and politically driven, asserting it reveals the INDIA bloc's blatant disregard for democratic institutions when judicial outcomes do not align with their political goals.

He declared, “This is merely an effort to instill fear among judges and to undermine the independence of the judiciary.”

Nagenthran launched a strong critique against the Congress party, the leading faction of the bloc, reminding that the nation still “shudders at the memory of the Emergency”, when constitutional rights were suppressed, and democratic institutions were undermined.

He alleged that this same mentality persists within the current INDIA bloc.

Furthermore, he criticized the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) in Tamil Nadu for adhering to an authoritarian tradition. He accused the party of previously promoting leaders who discussed the destruction of ancient temples while keeping individuals who allegedly mocked the revered 'Kanda Sashti Kavacham'.

Nagenthran stated, “In a democratic nation, even governments must adhere to constitutional limits. When the DMK government attempted to infringe on the fundamental right to worship, the judiciary intervened to protect the people's rights. That judicial safeguard has unsettled the ruling party, prompting them to silence the very institution that defended the people.”

Characterizing the impeachment attempt as a direct assault on the judiciary, a cornerstone of Indian democracy, Nagenthran assured that the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) would vigorously oppose and thwart any such maneuvers in Parliament.

He warned that the people of Tamil Nadu will not tolerate attempts to diminish independent institutions.

Point of View

The ongoing political tensions surrounding the judiciary highlight a critical moment for India's democratic institutions. The balance between government authority and judicial independence is essential for maintaining public trust in governance, and any perceived threats to this balance warrant careful scrutiny.
