Chennai, Dec 9 (NationPress) Former BJP chief of Tamil Nadu, K. Annamalai, sharply criticized the ruling DMK and the opposition INDIA bloc on Tuesday, accusing them of undermining the Constitution by utilizing impeachment as a political instrument against the judiciary. He asserted that their claims of safeguarding constitutional values were merely empty rhetoric.
In a forceful statement, Annamalai contended that the DMK and the INDIA alliance were exploiting disqualification and impeachment proceedings to intimidate judges and the judicial system.
Commenting on the recent developments involving Justice G. R. Swaminathan's order, Annamalai questioned the rationale behind initiating impeachment actions when the Tamil Nadu government had already approached the Supreme Court of India seeking relief regarding the verdict.
"If the State government itself has appealed to the Supreme Court for assistance, what is the purpose of an impeachment notice?" he queried.
"Is this not a blatant attempt to coerce the judiciary into submission?" Annamalai further claimed that the politics of DMK and the INDIA bloc were fundamentally focused on minority appeasement rather than a true commitment to constitutional principles.
"Their loud assertions about protecting constitutional rights are simply theatrical. In truth, they are jeopardizing the very essence of the Constitution," he added.
Posing a series of pointed questions, the BJP leader inquired whether the opposition was signaling to the public that any judicial verdict they disagreed with would be met with threats of impeachment.
"If a judgment does not align with the INDIA alliance, will they attempt to intimidate judges into compliance by brandishing the sword of impeachment over them?" he asked.
Annamalai characterized this trend as a serious threat to democracy, stating that there could be no greater danger to the Constitution than the politicization of impeachment.
He criticized both the DMK and the INDIA bloc for once again demonstrating that "divisive politics" and "institutional pressure" were their primary strategies.
"Independent institutions are the foundation of our democracy. When political coalitions start viewing the judiciary as an obstacle to be coerced rather than a pillar to be honored, the nation enters perilous territory," he warned.
The BJP has consistently defended the judiciary amidst the controversy surrounding the Tirupparankundram hill verdict, while the DMK and the INDIA bloc are facing escalating criticism from opposition parties regarding their impeachment initiative against a sitting High Court judge.
It is worth noting that the judge upheld the cultural and religious rights of devotees.
